Haiku and Speech Competition 2010

at the Japanese-American Society of New Jersey

The teachers of the Japanese language and cultural programs at the Japanese-American Society of New Jersey are proud to announce that they are hosting a haiku and a speech contest for the students. Students of the Japanese programs are invited to compose haiku poems and give speeches in Japanese language.

Haiku Contest

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Deadline:  All entries must be received by April 17, 2010.

Eligibility:  The contest is open only to students who are attending, or have attended since April 2007, or have signed up for an upcoming Japanese language or culture class at the JAS of NJ. The contest will have two divisions: a selected theme or your own theme.

Regulations:  Only poems that have not been previously published or submitted to any other contest are eligible. Each student may submit up to two (2).

Selected Theme [Kenjitsu Dai/Kigo]:  桜sakura), or つぼみ(tsubomi)or 新緑(shin-ryoku

Submissions: Each haiku must be submitted on a sheet of plain 8½” x 11” paper.  Please type or write each haiku legibly in ink on the front of the sheet.  No names or identification should appear with the poem; attach each student’s information (student’s full name, age, class type[private, group/Basic, group/Intermediate, group/ Advanced, culture class], how long you have studied Japanese[for ___ months, for___ years, or since ____/____/____]) on the back.

Speech Contest

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Deadline:  All drafts must be included with your submission, and must be received by April 17th, 2010.

Eligibility:  The contest is open only to students who are attending, or have attended since April 2007, or have signed up for an upcoming Japanese language or culture class at the JAS of NJ.   The contest will have two divisions: a selected theme or your own theme.

Regulations:  Only drafts that have not been previously published or submitted to any other contest are eligible. Each student may submit only one (1).  Basic: should submit a min. of 1 paragraph to a max. 3 paragraphs, Intermediate: should submit a min. of 3 paragraphs to 1 page, Advanced: should submit a min. of 1page to 2 pages.

Selected Theme:  Your most and least favorite aspects of America; or, Why is America a great country? or, What do you think about the relationship between America and Japan?

Submissions: Each draft must be submitted on a sheet of plain 8½” x 11” paper.  Please type each draft legibly in ink on the front of the sheet, and attach each student’s information (student’s full name, age, class type [private, group/Basic, group/Intermediate, group/Advanced, culture class], how long you have studied Japanese[for ___ months, for___ years, or since ____/____/____]) on the back.

Date  Saturday, May 1st Time  1:30PM -3:30PM

[Speech division]

Students who make entries will give speeches in front of the judges and the audience.  The speeches must be finished within the stated time [Basic: 2-3 minutes, Intermediate: 3-4 min., Advanced: 4-5 min.]  Speeches should reflect the level of Japanese competence.

[Haiku division]

All entries will be judged by the contest day.  The winning haiku poems will be announced at the award ceremony.
